HATE SPEECH AND FORNICATION ARE ALL PERFECTLY LEGAL…

GOSSIP, SLANDER, HATE SPEECH AND FORNICATION ARE ALL PERFECTLY LEGAL– AND IMMORAL

If we begin with Jesus who is the object of our faith he then shapes our speech. If we begin with our politics our politics will shape our speech. If it is humorous for a politician to trash the liberals or the conservatives then it is “my right” to do the same. We do have a right of free speech as citizens of a constitutional democracy. But have we forgotten that “free speech” is free only when it is the slave of Christ! Therefore, “speak the truth in love,” shapes all of our words in public and private venues. After all, Jesus the Lord is the one who gives the governmental authorities their authority.

Hate speech, slander, and gossip are all “my rights,” just like fornication. But Constitutional rights are not the standard. The standard in Christ is,” Is it helpful?” and “does it build up those who hear my words?” “Does my speech embody Christ’s truth and love?” It’s seldom about law. It is about the freedom and wisdom Christ gives. It’s about our witness.

Clearly we renounce the naked public square- a place where faith is not allowed. But we also renounce the sacred public square that declares only the sacred truths of my faith get a hearing. We contend for the loving public square where as a part of our public discipleship as citizens of heaven as well as the United States we embody peace toward other views of faith and politics. We actually listen and talk to people with whom we have fundamental disagreements. The apostle Paul on Mars Hill, Athens’ public forum, respectfully said, “It is plain to see that you Athenians take your religion very seriously.” He was initiating a heavenly conversation in an earthly public forum for Jesus’ sake.

Because we are called to announce the Good News of Jesus to the world we possess the authority to do so. Authority refers to the right and the power to act. We simply have no right and no God-given power to judge the world. “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? …God will judge those outside.” 1 Corinthians 5:12. Paul is saying to us, “Instead of trash talking the world take care of your trash.” For me that begins with one prayer:  “God be merciful to me a sinner!”
